Understanding RV Model Numbers

RV Model Number

The time has come! You have finally saved up enough money to buy the much-desired RV. You may find yourself pondering, “now what”? What are the next steps you need to take? What type of RV? What style, design, color, or special elements? Now you seem a little overwhelmed. Do not panic! Giant Recreational World will help answer all your questions and get you into your next RV.

When you start shopping for your future RV, there are a few things to think about which will help narrow down your options. The first step is to start learning about the different types of RVs, the various brands, and the floor plans offered. While searching, you might think, “what do these numbers at the end of the RV name mean?” Each RV has numbers and letters that tell you about that model. It is kind of like telling you the floorplan type, square footage or length of the vehicle, and the features. Not every manufacturer follows that “secret code” though. Always double-check with the manufacturer's website or details on the model you are looking at.

Let’s take a look at some basic RV model vocabulary. Some important codes to describe the kitchen area, living area, bedrooms, and more:

  • FK: Front Kitchen- an area closest to the tow hitch, specific to towable trailers
  • RK: Rear Kitchen- kitchen located opposite side of the hitch, usually towable
  • OK: Outside Kitchen- a small area located on the outside of the trailer that may include a grill, burners, refrigerator, or small drawers for storage
  • DS: Dinette Slide- the slide includes a dinette
  • RL: Rear Living - a lounge area or area located towards the back of the RV
  • FL: Front Living - an area located in the front of the RV for lounging
  • RE: Rear Entertainment - the rear living area that may be similar or the same to rear living
  • BH: Bunk House - Also known as bunk beds or smaller beds for children
  • Q: Queen Somewhere - includes a Queen size bed on the RV
  • QB: Queen Bed
  • K: King Somewhere - includes a King size bed on the RV
  • KB: King Bed
  • RB: Rear Bath - bathroom located in the rear
  • FB: Front Bath - bathroom located in the front
  • WS: With Side - the unit includes a single slide out
  • S: Single Side - only one side on the model
  • SS: Super Slide - a long slide that runs the length of the main living area

Understanding those codes are important as knowing what the numbers in the model name mean. Most of the time the numbers indicate the length of the RV. The number does not include the hitch or tow vehicle so you may need to look those details up on the manufacturer website. Knowing the length will help you determine where you camp as some campgrounds have restrictions on length. Next, let’s take a look at some examples of floor plan models.

Having all of this knowledge will help you decide which RV fits your wants and needs the best. You can look at RVs online or in-person and have an idea of what you are looking at. Don’t forget to check the manufacturer's website for the details if those are not provided. Of course, the employees at Giant Recreational World will assist you however needed and get you driving your new RV quickly!
